One smoothie a day keeps the doctor away..
Hippocrates, the father of western medicine said once
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food". I absolutely live by these words.
I rarely get sick and the secret about it is simply a whole, plant-based diet.. and drinking smoothies!
A smoothie is made of water and fruits and/or vegetables blended in a high-powered blender in a smooth consistency. Blended drinks are full of live enzymes. Enzymes are vital for our well being because they break down the food that we eat. More importantly, they are needed for all body functions too. They are found in every organ and cell in the body.
Smoothies are whole foods blended. They gives the body all the nourishment it needs in a whole-food form. Nourishment in the form of liquid helps take the stress off your digestive system, by that mean providing greater energy needed for other bodily functions.
Ever wonder why you always feel tired and sick ? Because you probably nourish your body with processed, canned, microwaved, pasteurized, highly acidic- forming (dairy, meat, sodas, white food...) food. As in consequence the body has to produce its own digestive enzymes in higher amounts than necessary. That process impairs the body's production of metabolic enzymes which are needed to repair body organs and fight disease.
That's why everyone should drink one smoothie a day, and especially a green smoothie.
Why a GREEN smoothie? because the chlorophyll, the bio molecule that gives the green color of plants helps build new cells, keep the regeneration process going, neutralize free-radicals and flushes the toxins, which means keep you energized, clean and youthful.
One smoothie alone is packed with vitamins, minerals, phyto-chemicals and micro-nutrients, live enzymes and is easy to digest.
Here's the recipe of my best green smoothie:
- 1 medium granny smith apple
- 1 handful of fresh baby spinach
- 1 handful of fresh kale
- 1/2 of a ripe medium avocado
- 1 TB fresh Italian parsley
- juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1 cup of water
(feel free to add more parsley (calcium rich food) or lemon juice, according to your taste)
Blend everything in high speed and enjoy!
