How a selfish morning routine can be beneficial for having a good day.
This morning when I checked my emails, I came across an article in the Healthy Living section of Huffpost. This article was titled "The Simple Things You Should Be Doing Every Morning (But Aren't)".
As I was reading it, I could see I was already doing most of those things. It gave me the idea of writing that post.
The author of that article Kate Bratskeir says: "The alarm sounds and you're off: Onto checking emails , finding car keys and, if you're lucky, brushing your hair. The madness, the rush of it all -- it's got to stop. Adding intention into your morning routine is in your best interest: It sets the tone for the rest of your day, and may ultimately reflect how productive, happy and calm you'll be for your following waking hours.
You have the power to wake up on the right side of the bed every single morning for the rest of your life."
I agree completely with her arguments. If I don't follow my morning routine as soon as I wake up, I'm not setting the right attitude for the rest of my day
That morning routine that I've been following have been essential to my well-being.
Here are the 6 things that help me set a mode for a good day:
1- I don't use my phone
Don't read your emails, check the news, Facebook, Twitter or any social network as soon as you wake up as it distracts you from the most important thing to focus on when you wake up: you
2- I stretch
Every morning, I awake and energize gently and slowly my mind and body with a short yoga routine.
Then I practice a Sun Salutation to greet the day and open my heart.
3- I meditate
After my yoga routine, I sit leg crossed and closed eyes. I breath deeply and slowly and I focus on my breath going in and out. Meditate is a hard thing to do because of that perpetual loud chatting in my head. I constantly think. I can't find peace and silence within me because of my need to know the answer for everything.
I found that Deep Breathing is key in my meditation though. I helps clear my mind for a bit and let room for new and fresh thoughts.
If anybody knows other ways to quiet the mind and let go, I'd love to hear about it.
4- I visualize my day ahead
Every morning, I make a list of all the thing I want to do for the day. As I write down, I visualize what needs to be done. I make lists all the time, because I need organization and daily routine. to keep me grounded and focus. It helps me set goals and ideally achieve them. Reaching short term goals on a daily basis, gives you the courage, the willpower and the confidence to reach bigger ones, one step at a time.
5- I am grateful for what I have
Something that I used to NOT be. I'm still in the learning process of being grateful for what I have, I am or I've accomplished. Take a few minutes to think of you are grateful for or write them down, which I do. Writing, reading out loud and visualizing the things you are grateful for can have a strong impact on who, what and where you are at the very present moment. That is what I've learnt from doing it. In my recurrent states of gloominess and hopelessness, expressing all the things I am thankful for in my life helped me going on, embracing the bright side of life and love myself again. Being grateful for what you are and have opens doors to more things to be grateful for.
6- I listen to my favorite radio show, podcast or music when eating breakfast.
It certainly puts me in a good mood and connects me with the people I appreciate and inspire me.
And you, how will you start your day tomorrow?
Love~
